Super Classy Used Cars Under 5 Lakhs

TrueScore: The best used car valuation deal Get the best value for your used car Best cars to buy under Rs 5 lakh. Your first step into car ownership is also the most complicated. Here are the best options to check out, around the Rs 5 lakh mark.

Despite the fact that there are more than 253 million cars on our roads, car ownership remains a luxury that less than a quarter of the country’s population can afford. Cars are still an aspirational product, and the decision to buy a car is still subject to intense scrutiny and thought. Entry-level cars are therefore tricky because the things you get are essentially essentials, although what is considered essential to a buyer is always subjective. If you’re looking for the convenience and safety of private transportation, given the pandemic, there are plenty of affordable options. Despite driver airbag and ABS being government-mandated equipment, global NCAP ratings are still terrible for the entire segment, but if it’s two wheels you’re looking to upgrade to, these are some pretty solid options.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso | On-road price: Rs 4.06 lakh (STD) – Rs 5.00 lakh (VXI Plus) | CNG Option: Available | Claimed fuel economy: 21.4 kpl | Value for money: 4/5 | A relatively new competitor is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, a powerful little crossover, made from compact SUVs to make it easier to tackle our roads. Basically, the S-Presso is the evolution of the compact hatchback. It has a small 1000cc engine producing 67bhp, lots of space and a high driving position, allowing you to weave through traffic without feeling overwhelmed by the bigger cars around you. The S-Presso offers excellent boot space (270 litres) and plenty of headroom, but does not offer a stable high-speed driving experience. Of course, then, the S-Presso’s strength lies in its ability to be an efficient commuter. Fast as a boulevard racer, it comes with an optional AMT gearbox, making it very attractive to newly licensed drivers. If you’re willing to stretch your budget, the S-Presso is also available in a CNG-powered factory-equipped model for Rs 5.67 lakh (on-road). For a budget car, the S-Presso has steering wheel-mounted audio controls and a 7-inch touchscreen center console, on the highest variants. A driver’s airbag, ABS with EBD come as standard, and unfortunately a passenger airbag is still an optional extra. (Image: marutisuzuki.com)

Renault Kwid | On-road price: Rs 3.8 lakh (STD) – Rs 4.61 lakh (RXL) | CNG conversion: Not available | Claimed fuel economy: 21-24 kpl | Value for money: 2/5 | The Kwid was one of the leading stars in the entry-level hatchback segment, bringing unprecedented brawn and design to the segment. Although the Kwid’s 800cc engine is not for enthusiasts, it is the only one that falls under our prescribed budget. The AMT option may be more expensive, but it’s worth the investment for entry-level drivers. Like most AMTs, it doesn’t like to be rushed, so if you’re looking for peppy performance (as good as a 68bhp engine can be) stick to the manual. Like the S-Presso, the Kwid offers a lot of boot space, however, not as much for the head. It comes with a very practical 184mm of ground clearance and plenty of plastic wrap around it, making it easy to drive and own around town. While the entry-level STD model is one of the best affordable cars in this segment, its wheezing 800cc engine and shoddy materials detract from its appeal. If you are looking for a more satisfying package, the RXT variant (at Rs 5.3 lakh) is better.

Best Cars In India Under 5 Lakh With Price, Specs

Datsun GO | On-road price: Rs 4.83 lakh (GO D) | CNG Option: Not available | Claimed fuel economy: 19 kpl | Value for money: 3/5 | The Datsun Go is really, getting a little long in the tooth. The quality of the plastic is poor, the ride is very dynamic and the high speed stability is questionable. So why should you consider the GO? Only because of its powerful engine with speeds and its excellent power / weight ratio. The ace up the sleeve of the Datsun Go is its great performance and comfortable seats. There is no AMT option, but the Datsun GO comes with 2 airbags as standard, along with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist. This gives GO an advantage in terms of utility. If there is one thing working strongly against the GO, it is that Datsun as a brand is ready to close shopping in India. While it’s not a stretch to imagine Nissan continuing to offer aftermarket support, it won’t help the resale value of Datsun-badged cars.

Hyundai Santro | On-road price: Rs 5.2-5.54 lakh (Execution Period) | CNG Option: Available (for Rs 6.48 lakh) | Claimed fuel economy: 20 kpl | Value for money: 3/5 | With the small size Eon out of production, it was time for the great Santro to return to form and serve Hyundai faithfully in the entry-level segment, a segment it once dominated. An entry-level Santro might be a little over the budget, but it’s still worth considering because the Santro badge shouldn’t be taken into account when looking for a healthy first car. With a 1.1-liter gasoline engine, the Santro has the largest cylinder capacity in the class and develops 68 hp of power. The Santro is also significantly larger than most of the competition and at 1560mm, it is taller than them. Although it only includes a driver’s airbag as standard, the Santro is roomy, offering more legroom at the expense of boot space (235 litres).

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R | On-road price: Rs 5.07 – 5.44 lakh (LXi) | CNG Option: Available (for 6.14 lakh) | Claimed fuel economy: 21.79 kpl | Value for money: 4/5 | The Wagon R might be more boring than the celery, but few cars could match it
