Mombasa has much more to explore than its rich history and culture. It also boasts beautiful beaches, nature attractions and vibrant nightlife.
Exploring the ancient city of Mombasa is the best way to start your journey along the coast. It gives you a glimpse of how different cultures lived in harmony on the island over the centuries.
You will discover old buildings along narrow alleys that reflect the rich heritage of the inhabitants – locals, Arabs, Asians and Europeans. With beautiful arched doors and beautiful balconies, the ancient houses symbolize the rich history and architecture.

During the walk you will see the old post office, Hotel Africa and more interesting sites. Be sure to walk along the main street (Ndia Kuu).
You don’t need a guide to explore Old Mombasa. However, if you want to see the old suburb with knowledgeable locals, join this exciting tour, or this one.
I was born and raised in the backwaters of Kenya where the sunsets are absolutely beautiful. Now I live near the Laikipia Plateau and not a week goes by without me seeing free roaming wildlife. What I don’t experience much are the sandy beaches and the sound of the waves.
If you’re like me and love the ocean, there’s no better place than Nyali Beach for a coastal experience. The beach is close to Mombasa and offers a peaceful environment to relax. In addition to walking along the beach, you can also surf, swim and sunbathe at Nyali Beach.

Swahili cuisine is a wonderful mix of the different cultures that live along the Kenyan coast. It contains local, Arabic, European and Indian influences. Trips to Mombasa become even more enjoyable when you sample the local Swahili dishes.
The typical Swahili dish consists of rice and various spices, such as cloves and coriander. The rice is prepared with different ingredients such as fish, chicken and beef to make the dish delicious.

I especially like eating at Mombasa Dishes. They serve delicious Swahili meals at reasonable prices (starting at $5). Other good restaurants in Mombasa are Barka, Foroodhani and Char Choma.
It’s one thing to eat a local meal, but quite another to prepare it yourself. If you enjoy being busy in the kitchen and cooking your favorite Swahili dish then join this cooking experience.
You will visit a local market to buy ingredients and prepare the dish. This is also a great opportunity to learn about Swahili culture from your local guide.
A tour of the Fort Jesus Museum is highly recommended. The museum is located in the old town and was built between 1593 and 1596 as a Portuguese fort to guard the old port of Mombasa.

Gaspar Rodrigues used Giovanni Battista Cairati’s designs to build the fortress on behalf of King Philip II of Castile.

In 1962 it became a museum and in 2011 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since then, Fort Jesus has become the most popular tourist attraction in Mombasa.

There are many fun things to do in Mombasa, but nothing gives me more pleasure than relaxing on the beach at Mama Ngina Waterfront. The sea breeze, the freshly baked potato chips, the tugboats pulling the barges, the sights of the ferries beautifully lit up at night – once experienced, these things stay in your mind forever.
Mama Ngina Waterfront is a public park overlooking Kilindini Harbour. It is a wonderful place to relax and unwind and is one of the most affordable places to visit in Mombasa.
If I could recommend one place to visit in Mombasa, it would be the picturesque waterfront. While there, take one of the Likoni ferries to witness the mesmerizing beauty of the coast at night.
