After earning her degree in Fashion Design, Sara D’Onofrio stepped into the real world with the same question that has long plagued all kinds of creative people: What now?

How To Start A Clothing Business?

The fashion school taught Sarah about grading, stitching and draping patterns. She can drop a bad French seam. She can tell you all about fitness. However, her education didn’t really teach her how to start her own fashion line.

Turning your dream into a business idea to launch and turn it into a reality in the frenzied world of fashion requires a certain set of skills, a generous dose of creativity and a bit of business acumen.

Today, Sarah is a designer and owner of her own clothing line. What I’ve learned over the past two decades is that taking your dream from idea to launch and realization in the frenzied world of fashion requires a certain skill set, a generous dose of creativity and a bit of business experience.

In this guide, we’ll explore the ins and outs of starting a clothing line from scratch—everything from education and design to production and marketing—with clothing sales tips from a seasoned professional.

Sarah has lived and worked in two countries, and her experience includes everything from design and manufacturing to education and physical retail. She has struggled and thrived, sometimes simultaneously, over her many years in the industry.

Season fifteen. She has since launched her eponymous brand as an online store, winning numerous awards, and her work has appeared in numerous publications and retail stores.

Designers like Vivienne Westwood and Dapper Dan have had great success in the fashion world, even though they were self-taught. And they started their career before the internet. We live in the age of accessibility, when learning to rebuild an engine or sew a shirt can be learned simply by watching a YouTube video.

It’s possible to skip school and still start your own clothing line, but a formal education, whether in the classroom or online, has its advantages: learning the latest industry standards, accessing resources and equipment, making contacts, and getting feedback from professionals.

Although Sarah owes much of her success to learning professional skills in the classroom, she gained much of her education on the job, working in corporate retail. “I wanted to work for myself, but I felt it was important to gain experience,” she says.

Sarah is a big advocate for spending a few years learning the ropes from other brands and designers. “It took me a long time to be confident enough to fill a store with my clothes,” she says. “I think I needed time to grow and get advice and experience.”

Many institutions offer fashion design and small business programs in a variety of formats. Schools such as Parsons in New York and Central Saint Martins in the United Kingdom are known for their fashion programmes.

If you’re more motivated than money or time, there are a growing number of face-to-face courses and online courses for aspirants in the fashion industry. Check local colleges for virtual or part-time formats that fit your schedule and budget, or consider learning at sites like MasterClass (there’s a fashion design course taught by Marc Jacobs himself), Maker’s Row Academy, or Udemy.

As Sarah discovered, the world of fashion and the world of business overlap much more than she expected.

How To Start Up A Clothing Business

Starting a clothing line requires many of the same considerations as starting any business. How much does it cost to start? When should you seek capital to start your business? What outside help will you need to navigate the legal, financial, manufacturing and distribution aspects of the business? Where and how will you make your clothes? Let’s dig.

This guide is for those who want to design and develop their own clothing brand and collection. If you’re interested in the world of fashion but don’t have the interest or skills in design, consider reselling by buying in bulk or trying dropshipping.

For those who are designing a clothing line from scratch, this is the point where you decide what kind of business you want to run. This will help you determine in advance how much time, effort, and resources you will need.

Once you have a business idea for your clothing line, you may be able to fund it yourself and get started. Custom tailoring and sewing your own clothes means you don’t have to carry a lot of supplies. However, you will need to invest up front in equipment and large quantities of fabrics to be profitable. Other costs include material delivery, your site launch fee, and your marketing budget.

If you plan to go and work with manufacturers in the production cycle, you will have high upfront costs to meet the bottom line. A solid business plan and practice costing will help you determine how much financing you will need.

Either way, expect to need thousands of dollars upfront. “In fashion, it’s not just about the cost of the fabric, the buttons, and the labor,” Sarah says. “You pay for delivery, you pay for heating and rent.”

However, there are many low-budget entry points into the fashion world, including dropshipping, dropshipping, and print-on-demand.

Sarah keeps a close eye on trends, but ultimately only includes those that make sense for her brand.

Through Sarah’s years of growing her brand as a prankster, she’s learned that while following trends is very important, it’s just as important as focus. Examine your strengths and be true to your design sensibilities.

Fashion School will teach you the basics of making everything from lingerie to evening wear. “The trick is to find what you’re good at and focus on it,” says Sarah.

Although her line is consistent from year to year—the design choices in her pieces are unequivocally her own—Sarah always follows trends. The key, she says, is to adapt these trends to your brand, personalize them, and make them work for your customer.

“I’ve always had a good intuition about directions,” says Sarah. “But it’s all in translation.” Sarah has worked on plus-size collections during her time in the corporate world and said that translating trends also means taking into account the needs of the plus-size client.

Although she sticks to her strengths, Sarah takes into account what’s happening in fashion – and in the world around her – in her evolution. She says, “Enjoy your free time.” “I don’t do tights, and I don’t do sports bras, but this cute woven crop would look great with tights, so I’m going to include the trend.”

By keeping her production tight and retaining control over design, Sarah has been able to quickly pivot post-pandemic, adding face masks to her signature prints. She sold 1,100 masks within two months, and turned those sales into repeat customers.

To get inspired for your own idea, devour fashion publications, follow fashion influencers and subscribe to fashion newsletters and podcasts to stay inspired and catch trends before they happen.

Remember, “brand” doesn’t mean your logo (that’s the trademark). Building your fashion brand is an exercise in getting your values, mission, what you stand for, your story, and more on paper.

Creating brand guidelines will help inform all of your business and branding decisions as you grow. They will define visual direction, website design, and marketing campaigns. It should dictate what you are looking for in a retail partner or new employee.

Use social media to build a lifestyle around your brand: share your inspiration and work, introduce your personality, tell your story, and be thoughtful in every post.

“The key to social media is consistency,” says Sarah. “I think you should post every day, but it should also be fun.” She mixes her content with travel, inspiration, sneak peeks at work in progress, and even some interesting stats from her dashboard.

Sarah is an advocate of the sketchbook as one of the most important tools for a designer. “I carry my sketchbook with me everywhere,” she says. “When I’m painting, I think every now and then, ‘Oh, that little sketch would translate well into a repeating pattern.'” “

, she was not allowed to take her sketchbook with her due to competition rules. “It really kicked me out of my game,” she says.

Sarah says getting fabrics has a lot to do with who you know. Building a network in the industry can help you get access to contacts for textile agents, wholesalers, and mills. When she lived in Toronto, she knew the local fabric market and used an agent to gain access to the fabrics
