The chapters were thoughtfully organized and paced in a way that helps the students to learn the material. The content was updated and I don’t think this will be a situation where a new edition is needed every year.

I was excited to find this OER book. It is well done, detailed and thorough. I appreciated the included test banks. I would have liked to have seen some recommended activities for each chapter, but overall the book was great. I am glad to see an additional chapter on hospitality. I look forward to adopting this for my Fundamentals of Business class.

First I must say that I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy, teacher with a PhD in business, which is not a common combination of degree paths. I am intrigued by the prospect of adding more business theory to healthcare administration courses, but in my experience the cost to students has historically been prohibitive. We use a low-key health care admin textbook that lacks some big core business skills. When this opportunity arose to review materials that I could add to my curriculum at no additional cost, I was overjoyed. I think Scripack is comprehensive with the added bonus of my favorite chapter #18 Personal Finance, which is invaluable for physical therapy students leaving school with a lot of debt!
I found the content easy to read, well organized, and found no errors. I really liked the links to external videos that supported the concepts. I think the presentation was fair.

As this is the 2nd edition with a publication date of 2018, it was very current, however, after I started reading the 2nd edition I noticed that a 3rd edition (2020) has been published which includes figures, charts and some recent updates does. Change in law. Flipping through the book is valuable to me as an instructor and even more so to the student. I appreciate the relevance of being able to submit suggestions or improvements to the author and they provide a test bank to support this content! Doesn’t get much better than this!
Well written and not too technical. The story flows well from the beginning to the end of each chapter.
From what I can tell, it’s pretty consistent. I didn’t notice any change in tone or terminology, but then again, I’m reading this through the eyes of someone with a PhD in business, so it’s all very familiar.
When you visit the website, you can easily download each chapter in bits [https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/handle/10919/84848]. I started looking at the full .pdf of the second edition first and found that there were no bookmarks for each chapter, so scrolling was a bit tedious. I’ll add that piece to the full .pdf if possible and it looks like they did in the 3rd edition. However, accessing the modules online eliminates the need to download a complete .pdf book.

It starts with teamwork, which is perhaps one of the most important concepts in modern business. So I really do appreciate it. The 18 chapters of the second (and third) editions cover all the major elements of modern business. Of course, each chapter could be expanded into its own book. For example, Chapter 14 is Marketing, and there are entire textbooks on Marketing, but that is not the task of this book. The goal is to take you through all the major components of the business, as opposed to diving deep into each topic.
Again, I liked the interface with Online Video. The links to the whole thing appeared. Adds multimedia access to the words on the page.
I look forward to integrating this textbook into my physical therapy healthcare administration curriculum, as I can now gain insight into business fundamentals to complement the healthcare space my students will receive! The book thoroughly covers the entire landscape of modern businesses. While nothing significant is “missing”, I wish the authors provided a chapter that quickly takes students through the history of business and another chapter that discusses the future dimensions of business.
The content is correct. The authors have provided citations for key claims. The references contain hyperlinks to more scholarly resources on the topics discussed in the book.
The material is presented in a generalized manner – which means the book can stand the test of time for quite some time. However, the dynamics of modern businesses could have been better captured. The digital transformation of businesses and societies has shortened the life cycle of knowledge. More emphasis on e-business and digital models would make the book more relevant.
The ideas are organized systematically. Each chapter has a set of learning objectives and provides direction to the students. Students are asked from time to time to reflect on some key questions. The answers to these questions are then available in the material discussed. At the end of each chapter, some key equipment to carry is listed. It facilitates a natural form of learning.

One chapter (Chapter 15: Hospitality and Tourism) does not matter much. One may wonder why the authors devoted an entire chapter to one industry! Why not a similar chapter for other industries? It almost seems as if one of the authors had a chapter written for some other purpose that should have been included in this book. The book contains many other examples and case studies related to tourism. On a positive note, this book has additional benefits for hospitality and tourism students.

The book is written in clear form which can be easily read. The business terms are well presented and explained in detail. The content is well written for the first time student learning business and how to apply what is going on around them.
The book is consistent from chapter to chapter. The sources of content are well represented. Visuals compliment written material.
The chapters are smooth with transitions from topic to topic. The reading can be easily divided into sections at certain points in the course. This lesson seems well placed for the teamwork of students to learn every important topic in Fundamentals of Business.
