Philip is a popular author and author of many guide books, including Bradt’s Guide to Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa.

Kenya is one of the most diverse destinations in Africa. The main draw takes place in world-class parks such as the Masai Mara National Reserve, but the equatorial East African country has many other attractions. Popular sights in Kenya are the pristine beaches, beaches and ancient Swahili villages along the Indian Ocean. Another tourist attraction in Kenya is the opportunity to see the peaks of Africa’s highest snow-capped mountains.

Top 10 Adventures In Kenya Other Than Safari

Friendly, well organized and beautiful, Kenya offers everything you could ask for in a tropical African destination. Here are our author’s picks for the top 10 things to do in Kenya.

Masai Mara is the most popular safari in Kenya. Few zoos can be reliable when it comes to seeing lions, tigers, rabbits and other animals. Elephants and bison are common, and lucky visitors may bump into the Big Five and rare black rhino sightings. Wildlife viewing is excellent all year round, but peaks from August to October, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest cross the Tanzanian border. Seeing these wildebeest crossing the Mara River in abundance is one of the most amazing things to see in Kenya.

Mombasa’s For Jesus was built by the Portuguese in 1593 and has undergone several changes over the years. A Unesco World Heritage Site, it stands out from the sea, with towering walls rising 16m/52ft above the old harbour. Inside there is an excellent museum and a 17th century painting by an unknown Portuguese sailor.

Kenya shares its name with the second highest mountain in Africa, an extinct volcano, which is 5,199/17,057 meters high. A multi-day trek on a snow line isn’t for everyone, but it will definitely be high on the list of many things to do in Kenya. The coast passes through montane (mountainous) forests that are home to elephants and monkeys, and cool Afro-alpine moorland that is home to some of the world’s largest wetlands. You will reach Lenana Point, the highest non-technical peak at 4,985m/16,355ft.

Crazy Kenya Safari Activities

The beautiful lakes in the Rift Valley northwest of Nairobi are famous for their interesting bird life. More than a million flamingos sometimes congregate in Lake Nakuru or Bogoria, their pink color. Although flamingos are missing, you can expect to see other tropical birds, from pelicans and deer to beautiful lovebirds and bees.

Watamu, on the Indian Ocean coast about 100km / 60mi north of Mombasa, is located at the northern end of the coast which is surrounded by mushroom-shaped coral islands. It’s one of the few beaches I know where you can go with a snorkel and fins, and find that you’re looking at a peaceful park with a variety of fish. Non-swimmers can enjoy underwater activities in a glass-bottom boat.

Laikipia is different from other major safari areas in that it has like-minded nature reserves and conservation areas. Most hotels here operate as an all-inclusive; depending on who you visit, guided activities may include game drives, night drives, bush walks, horse riding or camel safaris. Wildlife viewing is excellent including all the big five, as well as the African wild dog. Laikipia is home to Grevy’s zebras, which are larger and narrower than other zebras, and the famous short giraffe.

The tectonic forces that created the Great Rift Valley also created Hell’s Gate, a spectacular zoo filled with lava flows and hot springs. Visiting Hell’s Gate National Park is one of my must-do’s in Kenya, as it is the only place where you can walk or cycle through the vast desert. Buffalo, giraffe and a variety of antelopes are present, but big cats also occasionally visit. The sky is dominated by Mt Longonot, a nearby volcano whose permanent caldera, which last erupted in the 1860s, is a 90-minute walk from the station.

Nairobi Travel Guide: 24 Top Things To Do In Nairobi Kenya

Lamu on the island is my favorite town in East Africa. It was established between the 17th and 18th centuries as a trading port and a center of Swahili arts and education. Today it is a coastal phenomenon, too remote to attract regular tourists, but the streets of the old town retain a strong Swahili culture.

Amboseli National Park is one of the most famous places in Kenya. The National Park is famous for its large number of elephants, which are often seen roaming the grasslands. Buffalo, giraffe, hippopotamus and wildebeest are common, and you may encounter big cats. Crowning Amboseli is the spectacular scenery offered by the world’s tallest mountain, rising 5km/3mi above the plains below. One of the most amazing things to see in Kenya is the summit of Kilimanjaro with snow emerging from the clouds above Amboseli, a phenomenon that occurs at dusk or dawn.

Fine white sand. Shake the coconut palm. The turquoise waters are protected by coral reefs. A selection of luxury hotels. Yes, beautiful Diani Lake, 33km/20mi south of Mombasa, ticks all the boxes when it comes to a tropical beach getaway. As a bonus, the surrounding forests support many monkeys, and make a great base for day safaris down the Shimba Hills National Reserve.

However, when planning a successful family trip, you need to consider more than this. Kids may not want to be in a safari vehicle every day, no matter how amazing the game is. To make the family safari vacation a success, you

This is an absolute winner for very young children, except for very young children, the adrenalin action inspired every family holiday to start cracking. Try to tackle the big bumps (younger kids may be asked to navigate some of the challenges) and be prepared to get wet.

Another favorite activity in Kenya for kids is animal hunting. One of the most family friendly lodges in northern Laikipia, children will be accommodated in a polyfiller bag. When they learn to recognize animals, they begin to recognize movements. If they get a good print, they can make a plaster, so you can bring a very special souvenir to take home.

Interesting Facts About Kenya

In a remote part of northern Kenya, on a private farm, there is a little piece of heaven we have named the Lost World Waterfalls. Surprisingly for other countries, here the river flows over the rock into a large pool surrounded by acacia trees and large rocks. After a morning game drive, stay here for the rest of the day. Recharge your batteries relaxing on the large cushions in the shade while the children play in the natural pool. There is a walkway above the water that they can jump on before going up and out of the mat and underwater.

Hell’s Gate National Park, near Lake Naivasha, is the best place to do some sightseeing. Children love to walk around the park, following the path down between the main roads near the entrance to the park. Zebra and impala have space and a small herd passes through. It’s not often that you can combine cycling with top quality wildlife viewing that is so guaranteed. See more photos of Hell’s Gate National Park on this resource page.
